This is a not-for-profit project to create a library about Open Source software and its technical, social impacts, open-access contents and application of open-source methodology in social areas. This library is intended for Chinese readers, while English versions will be supplemented whenever possible. This library will always freely available online, and always open for comments and further updates. Items in this library will use open access licenses, such as GNU/FDL or Creative commons depending on individual situations.
The project is carried out in the collaborative writing environment at Rockies Open Culture Lab (http://rl.rockiestech.com/node/99 ). Any help, be it translation labor or sponsorship, will be genuinely appreciated.

Why are we doing this project?
Open source developments present a huge opportunity for the underdeveloped world. For China, this means big commercial market in enterprise applications, a leverage to grow its own IT industry, and a golden source to train young talents. Open source phenomenon itself, as a vibrant part of the internet age, also deserves philosophical and sociological studies.
A good way of understanding the open source world is to read a collection of the best articles over the years. Yes, there are books published and abundant materials floating around the net. But firstly, it takes a book for the organization and navigation. Then it should be a free book, as most of open sources are. Of course, quality matters and matters most. So we should proofread the texts and versions, and complete with references, credits and etc. Finally, as we prepare this book chiefly for the Chinese readers, we need get a best translation, which has been a major problem in this part of the world.

So here we are. A live version of this book will be always here, open for updates, notes and comments.
